Proa Medical, Inc., has been granted patents in China and Russia for the company’s first product, the Brella Vaginal Retractor. Generally, the company is involved in development of pioneering and practical medical devices with respect to care-technology for women’s health. Earlier on June 9, 2015 Proa Medical was granted a United States patent covering the Brella Vaginal Retractor from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Product description: The Brella Vaginal Retractor is a latex free device employed to obtain easy access concerning vaginal or perineal wound repair. It is also a single-use device with a built-in light source (LED), which further aids in terms of providing finest visualization and access during the specific wound repairs. The device is sterile in nature and has a characteristic design in the form of an exceptional canopy, which further incorporates a bright, deep light source, to provide a lucid and unhindered vision of the vaginal walls and surrounding structures. Worldwide, repair of vaginal and perineal lacerations after childbirth is the most commonly employed surgical procedure. The patented Brella Vaginal Retractor is most frequently employed repair device in labor room in hospitals and delivery departments for the purpose of hands-free retraction and to gain deep illumination during wound repair.
Product usage: The retractor is handled using sterile technique and inserted into the vagina with the speculum end first. Subsequently, the retractor is gradually inserted until the flared proximal wings provide maximum support to the labia. The device is further opened by gently spreading the wings outward. The light turns on automatically, and the ratchet mechanism maintains the angle of retraction. The position of the device can be adjusted using the thumb paddle and tension can be adjusted by pressing the release trigger. For the removal of device, initially pressure is applied to release the trigger until the wings are fully closed. The light turns off automatically and the retractor is removed carefully from the patient and inspected to ensure that all parts are intact. The device should be disposed off properly following standard biohazard procedures.
Earlier on November 10, 2015, Russian Patent No. 2567270, “Minimally obstructive retractor,” was issued to the Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering and on December 16, 2015 China’s State Intellectual Property Office provided Notification on Grant of Patent Right for Invention No. 201280059534.0. Afshin Nadershahi, MD, MBA, the Proa Medical’s CTO/COO is recognized as the lead inventor. Furthermore, Proa Medical has obtained a broad license to Brella Vaginal Retractor and several other medical device inventions from the Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California (AMI-USC), along with the fully-paid preference to entirely own the intellectual property.
Arman Nadershahi, the Chief Executive Officer of Proa Medical and a registered U.S. patent attorney stated “We are very pleased with the issuance of this patent in China and Russia for Proa Medical,” and “In addition to providing intellectual property protection in large markets, the issuance of these patents confirms the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office’s and Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property’s recognition that the Brella represents a new and innovative medical device.”
In future direction, Proa Medical is also pursuing patent protection in numerous other countries, with an aim of providing benefits to women health from its devices by targeting large global market.
